Guangzhou INNORKOM Medical Limited – Your Trusted One-Stop Medical Solution Provider

What is a Transcranial Magnetic Stimulator?

A Transcranial Magnetic Stimulator (TMS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation device that uses Faraday’s Law of electromagnetic induction to generate time-varying magnetic fields. These fields induce electric currents in the cerebral cortex, which modulate neuronal activity—either exciting or inhibiting specific regions of the brain.

TMS has gained global attention for its clinical efficacy in treating major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, and Parkinson’s disease, as well as promoting motor function recovery after a stroke. As of 2025, TMS is also being actively researched for Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive enhancement applications.

How Does TMS Work?

TMS therapy relies on delivering precise magnetic pulses through a specially designed coil. When the coil is positioned over the scalp, the magnetic pulses painlessly penetrate the skull and generate induced electric currents in the brain tissue.

These currents alter the transmembrane potential of neurons, triggering membrane depolarization and neural excitation. This process can selectively target specific brain networks without the need for surgical intervention, making it an ideal non-invasive brain stimulation technology.

Clinical Application & Device Composition

TMS systems generally include: Power Supply and Control Unit, Discharge Capacitor Module, Magnetic Stimulation Coil, Protective Enclosure.

The intended clinical use of TMS equipment is to support non-drug treatment of neuropsychiatric conditions—particularly for patients with depression who are resistant to medication.

Types of TMS Devices

1. By Pulse Pattern:

  • Single-Pulse TMS (spTMS): Used for brain mapping and measuring motor evoked potentials.

  • Paired-Pulse TMS (ppTMS): Helps analyze neural plasticity and cortical connectivity.

  • Repetitive TMS (rTMS): Delivers rapid trains of pulses to induce long-lasting effects on brain activity. rTMS is the most clinically approved form for depression, stroke rehabilitation, and Parkinson’s disease.

  • Theta Burst Stimulation (TBS): Delivers bursts of high-frequency stimulation for shorter sessions with comparable efficacy.

2. By Application Setting:

  • Hospital-Grade rTMS Systems: Large devices ideal for clinics and psychiatric hospitals.

  • Portable rTMS Devices: Lightweight, user-friendly solutions for home use and community health settings.

Key Clinical Indications

Depression & Anxiety: Especially in treatment-resistant cases

Stroke Rehabilitation: Motor function recovery, speech, and swallowing therapy

Parkinson’s Disease: Improvement in motor and cognitive symptoms

Cognitive Disorders & Alzheimer's Research

Insomnia: Induces deeper sleep and regulates neurotransmitters

Migraine Treatment: Regulates cortical excitability and pain pathways

⚠️ Contraindications & Cautions

🚫 Do Not Use TMS On:

  • Patients with implanted electronic devices (e.g., pacemakers, defibrillators)

  • Epileptic patients or individuals with a history of seizures

  • Patients in the acute phase of cerebral hemorrhage or infection

  • Individuals using wearable medical electronics (e.g., insulin pumps)

⚠️ Use With Caution In:

  • Patients with metal implants

  • Pregnant women and children

  • Patients with malignancies, vascular embolism, or open wounds

🛡️ Safety Guidelines for TMS Therapy

1. TMS treatment should be administered by qualified medical personnel.

2. Conduct a full neurological assessment prior to therapy.

3. Customize stimulation parameters (frequency, intensity, duration) based on the individual’s condition.

4. Maintain a safe treatment environment, away from strong electromagnetic interference.

5. During treatment, the patient should remain calm and still to ensure accuracy.

6. Monitor the patient closely and pause therapy in case of discomfort or adverse reactions.

7. Regular equipment maintenance—including cleaning, inspection, and calibration—is essential to ensure safety and treatment effectiveness.
